A faulty car relay can have several serious consequences for a vehicle.

First, a faulty starter relay will prevent the car from starting; a faulty ignition switch relay will also prevent starting; and a faulty power window relay will prevent the windows from going up or down.

 

Second, relay failure can also cause engine instability. For example, a problem with a relay related to the air flow sensor may lead to abnormal intake air volume or abnormal fuel injection pulse width, thus affecting the engine's operating condition. A faulty fuel pump relay may cause an interruption of fuel supply, preventing the vehicle from running normally.

 

Furthermore, when relay contacts are burned out, they may become normally open, normally closed, or unable to switch positions, affecting the normal operation of the circuit.

 

A faulty relay may also manifest as the relay not working. For example, when the start button is pressed, a clicking sound may be heard but the starter motor does not turn, or there may be no sound at all and the starter motor does not turn.

 

Several methods can be used to diagnose relay faults:

1. Make a preliminary assessment of the relay's condition by listening to sounds and feeling vibrations;

2. Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance value. The coil resistance of relays of different models and voltages is usually within 2kΩ;

3. Measure the resistance between the normally open contact, normally closed contact, and common terminal to determine if the relay is functioning correctly.

 

In short, the impact of automotive relay faults on vehicles should not be ignored. Timely inspection and repair are necessary to ensure the normal operation of the vehicle.
